> Second, explaining the method of abbreviation. There are two kinds of abbreviation: first, abbreviated selection, which means taking the introductory title of each of the eight classes \[of offenses\]; second, abbreviated omission, which means omitting according to the categories of the classes. The precept-reciting master should weigh the urgency of the matter and observe whether the time permits proceeding or not. If conditions are relaxed, he recites extensively the thirty \[niḥsargika-pāyattika\] and ninety \[śuddha-pāyattika\], abbreviating the remainder; if urgent, after reciting the preface, he abbreviates the rest accordingly. The preliminary expedient methods before reciting are as in the extensive method of recitation; when the preface is completed and purity has been asked, one should say: "Venerable ones! These are the four pārājika dharmas, which the Saṃgha has constantly heard!" down to "Venerable ones! These are the saṃbahulāḥ śaikṣā dharmas, which the Saṃgha has constantly heard!" Each is separately titled with a general conclusion. From the seven adhikaraṇa-śamatha downward, one recites extensively according to the Dharma down to the final text. The text of the Dharmaguptaka is not clear, only stating that the remainder has been constantly heard by the Saṃgha; here it is explained according to the Vinayamātṛkā. If a perilous condition arises abruptly, after reciting the preface, one says: "The remainder has been constantly heard by the Saṃgha!" If one cannot even recite the preface, one says: "Now at the time of the fifteenth-day upoṣadha, let each upright body, speech, and mind, and do not be negligent!" Having said this, they may depart as they please. The above is explained according to the conditions, with additions or reductions following the above; if a single matter is violated, it all constitutes a substantive offense. Those who manage affairs among our contemporaries say: "The thirty dharmas have already been recited, which the Saṃgha has constantly heard." Since they say they have already been recited, it is a false speech before the assembly; all can be assessed according to the above. Or when there are conditions for abbreviation, they simply stop and do not recite, and all are equally disciplined for an offense. Therefore, it must be clarified.
