> Fifth, taking leave repeatedly: Former interpretations held that within a single varṣā, only three procedures were allowed, and anything diverging from this was not accomplished. Now it is said that one may take leave repeatedly. There are extensive interrogations and objections, as stated in the Commentary. As long as the circumstance accords with the Dharma, regardless of whether frequent or few, all are universally allowed; if it is certainly a circumstance of breaking precepts, even a single taking of leave is unacceptable. Thus the Vinaya lists more than twenty circumstances, merely saying, 'The Buddha has not permitted me to go for such a matter,' without saying that one cannot go repeatedly. Furthermore, considering circumstances of faithful parents alone, there are four instances; how much less should other miscellaneous invitations suddenly be restricted! The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: 'Whether with an invitation or without an invitation, if one must go outside the sīmā, one is completely permitted to take leave for seven days.' In the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, having listed many circumstances for seven nights, the text states: 'Whether for oneself or for another, whether not sending a messenger or sending a messenger, one should go; one is permitted one seven-night period, not two seven-night periods.' This means stating two periods of seven days at one time, or using them repeatedly in succession. If judged by reconciling the saṃgha, it seems that for a single matter repeated taking of leave is not allowed; however, that text contains provisions for going without an invitation, which is broader than the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya; that repeated taking of leave is not allowed is not explicitly clear in the text, so by principle it must be interpreted broadly. The Five Hundred Questions states: 'If one travels having taken leave for seven days and returns to one's own sīmā before the seven days are full, when traveling later one does not need to take leave again; only after the seven days are full does one take leave again repeatedly.' In the Vinayavibhāṣā, one may take leave. The Commentary explains: 'Having formerly requested seven days, when the matter is finished, one returns to within the sīmā; on the eighth day, one requests another seven days to go outside the sīmā to stay overnight.' This treatise was translated by Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha, who received this matter in person in India. How can one cling to a narrow, biased view, obstructing the three thousand worlds of the Buddha's teaching? I personally heard and saw from Tripiṭaka translators from India and those who came from India that since the Buddha's nirvāṇa, there has never been any established rule of taking leave only three times in a single varṣā; whenever matters accord with the Dharma, they are all allowed. The rest is detailed in the Commentary and the Manual.
