> Second, explaining the robe material.
> The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: If one obtains a new robe, or a robe offered by a dānapati, or a rag-robe, new material is patched to purify it. If already washed, after washing it is quilted to purify it. It must arrive on that very day without passing the night. It must not be obtained through wrong livelihood, flattery, hints, or pressuring, nor from what was relinquished under pāyattika. To purify it: in accordance with the Dharma, the four borders must have hems, and five strips must be made into ten panels; if it exceeds this number of strips, one must wash, dye, spread, press, cut into ten panels, and sew it oneself. It also states: One must not dye the robe with bright colors; one is permitted to use the kāṣāya color (meaning an improper color). The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: If it is not cut, made undersized, or not patched at the four corners; if it is rotten and spoiled, cloth that covered a corpse, or taken from a cemetery (what the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya calls rag-robes does not include robes from corpses); or if it has already been received as a kaṭhina robe, all of these are invalid; if it is made of pieced-together leaves, it is valid. The Matṛkā states: The three robes and old robes used by a deceased bhikṣu are invalid; urgent gift robes and seasonable robes are valid for receipt. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: Three robes that have never been used may be made \[into it\]. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: If washing, dyeing, beating, or sewing is not in accord with the Dharma; if it is too small, too large, made of brocade or patterned silk, received before pravāraṇā is completed, or if one relinquishes the five matters out of greed for material offerings, all are invalid; the opposites are valid for receipt. The Samantapāsādikā states: Robes belonging to the seven groups may be received; if one or two among the three robes are received, it is permitted. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: One must stitch the borders, attach loops, and make fasteners for receipt to be valid.
