> Fourth, the procedure for receiving the robe. First is the procedure for making the robe; afterward the procedure for receiving \[it\] is clarified. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya says: If an unfinished robe is obtained, a karman should be performed amidst the saṃgha to appoint a bhikṣu to make it; if one that is already finished is obtained, it should be received in accordance with the Dharma. The Samantapāsādikā says: If the robe is not yet finished, all the bhikṣus should be summoned to complete it together. One must not plead virtue \[or study\] to create difficulties \[and avoid it\], except for those who are sick. It must not be sewn \[with running stitches\]; one must backstitch it. The reason for such earnest diligence is that this robe was praised by all Buddhas, since of old, when Padmaprabha Tathāgata was surrounded by sixteen thousand bhikṣus, they made it together. The various schools have many explicit rules for making the robe; nowadays what one obtains is mostly already finished, so \[those rules\] are omitted and not brought out. Second, clarifying the actual receipt. One should take \[the cloth\], fold it crosswise, make a stitch every two spans, thus making five stitches, and place it in a basket in front of the sthavira. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: One should fold the robe, place it in a basket, and scatter various flowers upon it. Second, clarifying the harmonizing of the saṃgha to receive the robe. One should strike the bell to assemble the saṃgha, immediately setting aside those who broke the varṣā, those who did not observe the varṣā, those who committed a saṃghāvaśeṣa, and the others as listed above, making them all sit in a separate place because they do not participate in receiving the robe; the rest who are eligible to receive it sit together in one place. Although they sit separately in two places, they must join in the communal acts, so one must solicit their chanda and ask if they are in harmony. The reply is: 'The karman to receive the kaṭhina robe.' The sthavira makes the announcement: 'Let the venerable saṃgha listen! Today the saṃgha receives the robe of merit. If the time has arrived for the saṃgha, and the saṃgha gives its permission: the saṃgha now in harmony receives the robe of merit. Such is the announcement.' (Having made this announcement, giving it to a bhikṣu, one should ask: 'Who is able to hold the robe of merit?' The reply: 'So-and-so is able to hold it.') One should perform the karman, saying: 'Let the venerable saṃgha listen! If the time has arrived for the saṃgha, and the saṃgha gives its permission: the saṃgha appoints Bhikṣu So-and-so to hold the robe of merit for the saṃgha. Such is the announcement. Let the venerable saṃgha listen! The saṃgha appoints Bhikṣu So-and-so to hold the robe of merit for the saṃgha. Whichever elders approve the appointment of Bhikṣu So-and-so by the saṃgha to hold the robe of merit for the saṃgha, remain silent; whoever does not approve, speak! The saṃgha has approved: the appointment of Bhikṣu So-and-so to hold the robe of merit for the saṃgha is concluded. The saṃgha approves, because of silence. Thus is this matter maintained.' (He rises from his seat, bows at the feet of the saṃgha, kneels on one knee with palms joined before the sthavira, and \[the saṃgha\] should perform the karman to give the robe to him:) 'Let the venerable saṃgha listen! The saṃgha of this dwelling has obtained divisible robes; the saṃgha present ought to divide them. If the time has arrived for the saṃgha, and the saṃgha gives its permission: the saṃgha gives this robe to Bhikṣu So-and-so; this bhikṣu shall hold this robe for the saṃgha, receive and make the robe of merit, and hold it in this dwelling. Such is the announcement. Let the venerable saṃgha listen! The saṃgha of this dwelling has obtained divisible robes; the saṃgha present ought to divide them. The saṃgha now gives this robe to Bhikṣu So-and-so; this bhikṣu shall hold this robe for the saṃgha, receive and make the robe of merit, and hold it in this dwelling. Whichever elders approve the saṃgha giving this robe to Bhikṣu So-and-so, and this bhikṣu holding this robe for the saṃgha to receive and make the robe of merit and hold it in this dwelling, remain silent; whoever does not approve, speak! The saṃgha has approved, giving this robe to Bhikṣu So-and-so to receive and make the robe of merit is concluded. The saṃgha approves, because of silence. Thus is this matter maintained.' He should then arise, hold the robe basket, proceed before the sthavira, kneel on one knee, place it upon his head, and present it to the sthavira; the sthavira also places it upon his head. Having done this three times, he sets the basket before the sthavira; after sweeping away the flowers with his left hand, he holds the end of the robe with his right hand, placing about two feet of it in his left hand; he takes another fold, and so with four folds, holding them all in his left hand, he comes before the sthavira. When the sthavira sees him coming, he kneels on one knee and stretches out his hands, and the person takes the end of the fold with his right hand and presents it to the sthavira; then stepping back one fold, he entrusts it to the second sthavira; thus stepping back, through to the fourth sthavira. Having entrusted the robes, he returns to the space below the second sthavira, holds the robe in hand, and says aloud: 'This robe the saṃgha shall receive to make the robe of merit; this robe the saṃgha now receives to make the robe of merit; this robe the saṃgha has received to make the robe of merit (spoken three times).' Those bhikṣus should say: 'He who has received it has received it well; all the merits and renown herein belong to us.' When each has spoken thus, they reply: 'Indeed!' He should then arise, go before the fourth sthavira, hold the robe with his right hand, and place it in his left hand; having thus gathered the four folds, he goes before the fifth sthavira, proceeding as with the first sthavira; thus progressing down to the junior seats, he returns before the sthavira, holds the robe facing the saṃgha, kneels on one knee, and announces: 'Now the saṃgha in harmony has concluded receiving the robe of merit.'
