> Fifth, clarifying miscellaneous aspects of relinquishing the robe. In the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya, it is permitted to conclude after the full four months of winter, and it should be suspended. There are two kinds of relinquishment: first, the bhikṣu holding the robe of merit spends a night outside the boundary; second, the saṃgha harmoniously suspends it. It also extensively explains the methods of loss and relinquishment based on mental intent. Now, clarifying harmonious suspension: the Vinaya says: 'The saṃgha has gathered; it is in harmony; those not fully ordained have left; those who did not come have conveyed their chanda; what does the saṃgha now in harmony undertake to do?' The reply: 'The karman to suspend the robe of merit.' 'Let the venerable saṃgha listen! Today the saṃgha suspends the robe of merit. If the time has arrived for the saṃgha, and the saṃgha gives its permission: the saṃgha now in harmony suspends the robe of merit. Such is the announcement.' The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya has many methods of relinquishment: if one does not relinquish it by the fifteenth day of the twelfth month, on the sixteenth day it is automatically relinquished. Other schools have eight kinds or ten kinds. Each in accordance with violating the original intention constitutes relinquishment. Next, clarifying the operation and cessation of the five benefits: in the Vinaya, due to receiving this robe, keeping extra robes, spending the night apart from the robes, declining invitations, eating in separate groups, and visiting other families before or after meals are each clarified as in the 'Explanation of Marks According to Precepts'. As for keeping extra robes, beginning from receipt after the sixteenth day of the seventh month, it is permissible up to the fifteenth day of the twelfth month to perform a single purification through verbal declaration. The other subsumptions of proper and improper times are also explained in 'Explanation of Marks According to Precepts'. The Viśeṣacintābrahma-paripṛcchā-sūtra states: 'A bodhisattva has four dharmas by which he has no fear and his deportment is unshaken: first, loss of gain; second, bad reputation; third, censure and humiliation; fourth, suffering and distress. When obtaining gain his mind is not elevated; when losing gain his mind is not depressed; amidst the eight worldly dharmas, his mind is impartial. For him it is definitively said that karmic retribution of offense and merit is never lost.'
