> The sixth precept on building an oversized hut without an owner and without saṃgha authorization. It involves five faults: First, it requires human labor and management, obstructing cultivation of the path. Second, the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā says: it increases one's greed and attachments, destroying fewness of desires and contentment. Third, begging everywhere disturbs both humans and non-humans, prevents reverence and faith from arising, and destroys the true Dharma so that it does not long endure. Fourth, acting entirely on one's own initiative without requesting authorization may obstruct saṃgha affairs and cause much disturbance. Fifth, it may damage one's own practice, contravene the path of compassion, and ruin brahma-conduct. Six conditions constitute an offense: 1. Ownerless; 2. For oneself; 3. Begging \[for materials\] by oneself; 4. Exceeding the measurements without authorization; 5. The perception of exceeding measurements without authorization; 6. When the hut is completed, the offense is established. The Sarvāstivāda says: When the last two lumps of mud are not yet applied, it is a light sthūlātyaya; when one lump of mud remains, it is a heavy sthūlātyaya. The Samantapāsādikā says: If one leaves one lump of mud intending to finish it later, it is a sthūlātyaya; if one decisively abandons the intention, it is a saṃghāvaśeṣa. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya says: Tiles, wood, boards, stones, mortar, or thatch covering—down to the very last handful of grass—once the covering is completed, it is immediately a saṃghāvaśeṣa. If one uses it oneself, it is in all cases a duṣkṛta; only if the owner dies, leaves the path, or gives it to the saṃgha may it be used. In the Vinaya, if one constructs such a hut, one must first verify that the site is free from hazards and disputes, and only then approach the saṃgha to request the formal procedure; if he is not trustworthy, the entire saṃgha goes together to inspect it; if he is trustworthy, he should be granted permission to construct it. The Samantapāsādikā states: A site without hazards or disputes, leveled smooth like the surface of a drum, is then requested in the saṃgha; if it is six spans long and four spans wide or less, it does not require requesting authorization. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya says: Within twelve spans of the Buddha in length, and seven spans in width.
