> Precept 7: Taking robes beyond the limit. Six conditions: First, the bhikṣu has had his three robes lost or seized. Second, it is an unrelated householder. Third, \[the householder\] gives them because of the loss or seizure; if not given because of the loss, receiving them at will incurs no offense. Fourth, the bhikṣu knows that \[the householder\] is giving them because of the loss. Fifth, taking beyond contentment. Sixth, receiving them immediately constitutes the offense. The Vinaya says: If one has lost \[only\] one robe, one should not take \[a robe from others\]. If one has lost two robes, and the remaining one robe has multiple layers—whether double, triple, or quadruple—it should be ripped apart and made into a saṃghāṭī, down to an antarvāsas. The Samantapāsādikā says: If one has completely lost all of them, one takes the upper and lower robes, and seeks the remaining one robe in another place. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya says: If \[the donor\] invites one to take at will and offers many robes, if the cloth is fine, thin, or not sturdy, one should take \[enough\] to make two, three, or four layers; one should attach borders, patch the grimy places at the shoulders, and attach fasteners and loops. If there are remnants left over, one says to the householder: "For what are these remnants to be tailored?" If the other says: "I did not give them because of the lost robes; we simply give them to your Venerable Self!"—if \[the bhikṣu\] wishes to accept them, he may take them. In the previous precept, doing so for others incurs no offense; in this precept, if one begs and receives for others, one commits an offense.
