> Precept sixteen: forcibly spreading bedding. There are five conditions: first, another had borrowed and obtained \[the lodging\] previously, and his settling and staying therein was already fixed; second, knowing that the other resided there first; third, producing an intent to harass; fourth, forcibly spreading \[bedding\] in between; fifth, transgressing upon sitting or lying down. The Vinaya states: 'In between' means at the head end, at the feet end, or along either side. As for 'bedding', it ranges from a spread of grass or a spread of leaves down to a spread upon the ground or a sleeping felt. If one knows that another obtained it first and yet forcibly lodges there, it is a pāyattika. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: 'If, for the sake of harassing the other, one opens doors or closes doors, lights fires or extinguishes fires, or chants verses of benediction, reads sūtras, or expounds the Dharma, performing whatever the other finds unpleasant, each and every \[action\] is a pāyattika.' As for non-offenses in the Vinaya: not knowing beforehand; if having spoken, one stays, \[the other\] having first granted space; if the interval is wide and does not interfere \[with the other\]; if an intimate or old friend instructs, saying, 'Just spread it out, I will speak to the master \[of the lodging\] myself'; if one falls to the ground; if being ill, one tosses and turns and falls onto it; or in the case of dangers to life or brahmacarya, etc.—in all such cases, there is no transgression.
