> Precept seventeen: dragging another out of a saṃgha room. There are four conditions: first, it is a spring or winter room belonging to the saṃgha; if one occupies a summer room for oneself and drags someone out, it is a duṣkṛta; second, \[the other's\] settling and staying therein was previously fixed; third, producing an intent to harass; fourth, transgressing by dragging \[the other\] out. In the Vinaya, whether one does it oneself or instructs another to drag them out, according to the number dragged out and upon leaving the room, each is a pāyattika. If one drags many people out of one door, there are multiple pāyattikas; if one drags one person out of multiple doors, there are multiple pāyattikas. If one takes another's possessions and throws them outside the door, or closes the door locking another outside, these are all duṣkṛtas. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'When dragging another out, if \[the other\] clings to a pillar, grips a door, or leans against a wall, each \[release\] is a pāyattika. If one scolds them, and at each word they step away one by one, each is a pāyattika. If one gets angry at snakes or rats and drives them out, it is an offense of transgression; if one says, "These are useless creatures," and drives them out, there is no offense.' The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: 'If one is fond of snoring while asleep, one should rise and perform walking meditation; if one cannot perform walking meditation, one should rise and go to a secluded place; one must not harass others.' The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: 'If one drags out a disciple in order to subdue him, there is no offense. If one brings in an unwelcome person intending to cause him to leave on his own, whether he leaves or not, it is a duṣkṛta.' Dragging out the four lower assemblies is also a duṣkṛta. As for non-offenses in the Vinaya: having no hatred in mind, and evicting in proper sequence; expelling an unordained person when the limit for sleeping together has been exceeded; or if someone has broken the precepts, views, or deportment and is censured by others, or is expelled when they ought to be expelled; or if on this account there is danger to life or brahmacarya and one drives them out—in all such cases, there is no transgression. The preceding precept concerned a secular place and did not distinguish pure from defiled; this concerns a saṃgha place, and therefore distinguishes defilement.
