> Precept twenty-nine: eating food obtained through a bhikṣuṇī's praise. There are four conditions: first, one of the three assemblies of bhikṣuṇīs praises him and obtains food; second, knowing it; third, receiving and obtaining it; fourth, each swallow is a pāyattika. The Vinaya states: 'Praising' refers to \[praising him as an\] araṇyaka, a mendicant for food, or even one who maintains the three robes, or praising him as learned, an expounder of Dharma, a holder of Vinaya, or a meditator. 'Food' refers to food obtained from morning until noon; eating it, swallow by swallow, is a pāyattika. Aside from food and drink, if one obtains other offerings of robes, lamps, or oil, it is a duṣkṛta. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'Except for an old dānapati. Up to after food is served, when an equal offering is announced, and other bhikṣus arrive, if a bhikṣuṇī says there are other bhikṣus and the donor says, "Excellent!", there is no offense. If a bhikṣuṇī says, "These are the twelve dhūtas," it is a pāyattika. If she says, "Give much good food," and it is given equally, there is no offense. If she says, "So-and-so's disciples are learned and diligent; you should make a general invitation to the entire group," all commit a pāyattika. If she says, "So-and-so the leader of the assembly is diligent," and because of this bhikṣu twenty people are generally invited, one person counts as praised, and the rest do not commit an offense. If there is praised food, one must not abandon it and leave; one should exchange food in turn. If the adjacent seat is defiled and impure, and one does not wish to exchange with him, one should contemplate: "The food in this bowl is permitted to so-and-so bhikṣu; I should eat it," and then there is no offense. If she says, "The venerable so-and-so may constantly beg for food," there is no offense.' The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: 'If one did not know beforehand, and at the time of food she says, "It is good to give food to the bhikṣus," there is no offense.' As for non-offenses in the Vinaya: if not knowing; if the dānapati previously had the intention; if there is no thought of proselytizing; if the bhikṣuṇī herself acts as the dānapati; if the dānapati instructs the bhikṣuṇī to manage it; or if food is given without deliberate proselytizing, there is no offense.
