> Precept 41: Giving food to a tīrthika. Five conditions: first, it is a tīrthika; second, one knows \[it\]; third, one personally gives the food; fourth, not placing it on the ground or having someone else do it; fifth, their receiving it by hand constitutes an offense. The Pañcavargika-vinaya \[states\]: When beggars, beggar children, or beggar dogs and animals beg for food, measure one's own food portion, reduce it, and give it. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya \[states\]: Tīrthikas spy to find strengths and shortcomings; giving them food is not called corrupting families. The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā \[states\]: Giving to people without views is not an offense; if the saṃgha gives food to tīrthikas there is no fault, but one must not give it by hand.
