> The fifty-seventh precept: lighting a fire in the open. Four conditions: first, it is in the open; second, there is no justifying condition; third, lighting grass or wood so that there is a flame; fourth, lighting it constitutes an offense. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: Lighting a fire to warm oneself where the flame is four finger-breadths high incurs a pāyattika. The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states: If another has already lit it, whatever one subsequently does incurs a pāyattika. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: A sick person who requires fire to ease the body may light it himself or instruct another to light it (meaning upon inert earth, stone, or other materials). If there is no justifying condition, burning grass, wood, chaff, or dung all incur pāyattika. If it is half-charred, lighting charcoal, or not speaking the words 'know this and watch this,' all incur duṣkṛta. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: Whirling a firebrand into a circle, or stoking grass and wood in a fire together, all incur pāyattika. If living things are destroyed, there are two offenses: first, destroying living things; second, lighting a fire; on living soil, in principle there is yet another pāyattika. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: If shaking out a torch, it must be over ashes or tiles, and not on living soil. Exceptions in the Vinaya: Speaking the words 'know this and watch this.' If a sick person lights it himself or instructs another to light it. If one with reason nurses a sick person, boiling gruel, soup, or rice for the patient. If in a kitchen or a bathroom, smoking bowls, boiling dye, lighting lamps, or burning incense—all are permitted.
