> Precept Seventy-two: Slandering the Vinaya. The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states: "\[The prohibition is laid down\] first, out of respect for the prātimokṣa; second, to nurture the precepts; third, to extinguish evil dharmas." The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā also states: "Because before the twelve years, a single verse was constantly recited, whereas now the five classes are recited, they are called trivial and fragmented." Five conditions: first, it is the Vinaya; second, another bhikṣu is reciting the precepts; third, generating the intention to destroy the Dharma and not let it endure long. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: "Causing people to stay away from the Vinaya, neither reading nor reciting it, and slandering it, incurs a pāyattika." The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: "\[Saying:\] 'What is the use of reciting this? It only causes people doubt, distress, agitation, and unhappiness.' If one says this in accordance with the sūtras or Vinaya, each incurs a pāyattika." The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states: "If one recites each precept and slanders each one, each incurs a pāyattika; if slandered collectively, it is one pāyattika. Slandering during the introduction to the precepts also incurs a pāyattika, because it explains the meaning of the two hundred and fifty precepts." In the Vinaya, slandering the Vinaya is a pāyattika; slandering the Abhidharma or other sūtras is a duṣkṛta. Exceptions: reciting the Abhidharma first and then the Vinaya, and likewise for other sūtras; if one is sick, reciting the Vinaya after recovery; if one diligently seeks through skillful means to attain the four fruits of asceticism and will recite the Vinaya later, and does not wish to destroy the Dharma, there is an allowance.
