> First, explaining that of the great assembly. Within this, it is divided into seven parts: First, the request. In the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā, regardless of light or grave, all follow the Saṃgha to request three times, and then invite the master of repentance. When the recipient of repentance has made the simple motion, one makes repentance face-to-face three times, the text being like the pāyattika procedure. Now, explaining the establishment of the great assembly: it must have five or more persons before it may be carried out. When the monks within the boundary have all assembled, having fully practiced the īryāpatha, he approaches the Saṃgha, bows to their feet, first reveals his fault to the Saṃgha, and then requests, saying: 'Let the venerable Saṃgha listen! I, bhikṣu so-and-so, have committed the grave thullaccaya offense of an expedient to sexual intercourse, not remembering the count. Now I request repentance from the assembly of the Saṃgha. May the Saṃgha permit me, so-and-so, to repent, out of compassion!' (stated three times). Second, explaining the invitation of the master of repentance. He should approach a pure bhikṣu, join palms, kneel on one knee, and invite him, saying: 'May the venerable one be single-mindedly mindful! I, bhikṣu so-and-so, now invite the venerable one to be my master of repentance for a thullaccaya. May the venerable one act as my master of repentance for a thullaccaya, out of compassion!' (stated three times). Third, the master of repentance makes a simple motion, solicits chanda, and asks for harmony, replying: 'For the commission of a grave thullaccaya offense, a simple motion karman to receive repentance!' He should state the motion: 'Let the venerable Saṃgha listen! This bhikṣu so-and-so has committed the grave thullaccaya offense of an expedient to sexual intercourse, not remembering the count, and now requests repentance from the assembly of the Saṃgha. If the Saṃgha's time has arrived and the Saṃgha permits, I, bhikṣu so-and-so, will receive the repentance of bhikṣu so-and-so. This is the motion.' Fourth, one should explain the name of the offense, the type of offense, the characteristics of the offense, and the remaining habit-energy of breaking the precepts, as in the earlier and later repentances. Fifth, the actual renunciation of the offense, the text stating: 'May the venerable one be single-mindedly mindful! I, so-and-so, have committed the grave thullaccaya offense of an expedient to sexual intercourse, not remembering the count, and now disclose and repent before the venerable one, not daring to conceal it...' The rest of the words are as explained below under nissaggiya pācittiya. Sixth, the reprimand, saying: 'Reprimand your own mind to give rise to revulsion!' He replies: 'Yes!' Seventh: the above seven aspects are separately mentioned in the Vinayas and treatises; and as for the treatise applying to events, they are not systematically arranged. Now citing them comprehensively for reliable use, it is thought there will be no confusion. Taking just one offense as an example, the rest follow by analogy.
