> Third, lending out the property of the Three Jewels. The \*Mahāsāṃghika\* states: if stūpa and saṃgha property are lent to each other, a contract must be clearly drawn up, stating clearly when it was borrowed and when it is to be returned. When a duty officer is replaced, he must read the inventory before the saṃgha, recite and record it clearly, and entrust it to his successor; those who violate this incur an offense. The \*Daśādhyāya\* and \*Mahāsāṃghika\* state: when stūpa property is lent out for interest and profit is taken, it must be returned to the inexhaustible wealth of the stūpa; when Buddha property is lent out for interest, it must be returned to the inexhaustible wealth of the Buddha, intended for making offerings to the stūpa, and so forth; saṃgha property follows the same rule in the text. They must not be intermingled. The \*Daśādhyāya\* states: an individual person may borrow stūpa or saṃgha property; if he dies, its value must be calculated and reimbursed to the stūpa or saṃgha. The \*Sudarsana\* states: one may also borrow saṃgha wealth and property to construct a private room. The \*Upāsakaśīla-sūtra\* states: if a sick person borrows property of the Three Jewels, he must repay it tenfold; those who are not sick have no reasonable cause to borrow it arbitrarily. This differs from the Vinaya, and it is suspected that it applies to the two lay assemblies, though the text seems like the five monastic assemblies. The \*Wubai wen\* states: if a person borrows Buddha property and uses the interest for himself, it is equivalent to destroying the Dharma body. If someone offers oxen or slaves to the Buddha, they must not be used, nor bought or sold; if weapons of war are offered, they also must not be accepted. The rest is as described in the precept on possessing precious items.
