> Question: Against which offenses do these two receipts—by hand and verbal—provide protection? Answer: We now divide the four types of medicines and discuss them separately. As for medicine of the proper time, hand acceptance protects against two offenses: unreceived \[food\] and improper touch; verbal acceptance is the same. For improper-time syrup, hand acceptance protects against two offenses: first, it protects against unreceived \[food\] in the first place; second, it protects against improper touch by grasping what is unreceived. Verbal \[acceptance\] protects against two offenses: first, it protects against loss of acceptance past noon; second, it protects against loss of acceptance past the proper time and improper grasping. For seven-day medicine, hand acceptance protects against two offenses, identical to those for syrups; verbal \[acceptance\] protects against three offenses: first, it protects against loss of acceptance past the proper time; second, it protects against improper touch past noon; third, keeping overnight. (Formerly it was said to protect against indoor keeping; this lacks vinaya text, but using lifelong medicine as proof, listing it shows it is not allowed.) For lifelong medicine, hand acceptance is the same as above; verbal \[acceptance\] protects against six offenses: first, loss of acceptance past the proper time, being unreceived; second, improper touch; third, keeping overnight; fourth, indoor keeping; fifth, perhaps indoor boiling; sixth, boiling oneself (since it transforms raw into cooked). Next, clarifying the arising of offenses (because when not yet received, none of these faults exist; now that both receipts have been made, when the time passes, the faults arise): For medicine of the proper time, hand acceptance produces two offenses past noon: loss of acceptance and improper touch; past nightfall, it produces two offenses: keeping overnight and improper touch. For improper-time syrup, hand \[acceptance\] produces two offenses, identical to those for medicine of the proper time; verbal acceptance produces three offenses: when the dawn-sign appears, there are improper time, keeping overnight, and improper touch. For seven-day medicine, hand \[acceptance\] produces two offenses, identical to the above; verbal \[acceptance\] produces five offenses—speaking of when the dawn-sign appears on the eighth day, these are keeping overnight and improper time which incur forfeiture and fall (naiḥsargika-pāyattika), ingesting under improper touch which incurs naiḥsargika, and failure to forfeit the medicine which incurs duṣkṛta, fully comprising three pāyattikas and two duṣkṛtas.
