> Fourth, miscellaneous rules. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: When an āraṇyaka bhikṣu brings begged food back into the wilderness hermitage, he goes to his customary eating place, cleans and sprinkles it, and prepares water vessels, vessels for leftover food, seats, foot-washing stones, water-storage vessels, and foot-wiping cloths. If he sees another wilderness dweller coming, he should go out far to welcome him, take his bowl and robes, and if anything has been soiled by spreading, he should wipe, rub, shake out, wash, and dry them in the sun; once the guest is seated, he provides him with the water vessel and water, foot-washing stone, and foot-wiping cloth, placing the leather shoes on the left side so they do not become soaked with water; after the guest has washed his feet, he returns the various foot-washing utensils to their original places and, using washing powder, thoroughly cleans his own hands. Set aside a separate portion of food for robbers. Then offer water to that bhikṣu; next serve the meal, providing needed vinegar, salt, greens, and so on; if it is hot, one should fan him. If the time is about to pass, they should eat together; otherwise, wait until the guest has finished eating, take one's own bowl, and eat oneself. If there is leftover food, it should be given to humans or non-humans, or placed on clean ground free of grass or in water free of insects. Thoroughly wash the other eating utensils and return them to their original places, and cleanly sweep the eating area. If robbers come, tell them: 'Here is water and here is food; I have specially reserved clean portions for you; if you wish to eat, please eat.' One must know well the periods of the night and the names of the constellations and stars in different directions, lest one err in responding should robbers come and question one. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya permits forest dwellers to read star treatises. If one sees someone coming, speak with them first, displaying a gentle and joyful countenance; do not hang your head, but maintain correct mindfulness. The rest is as in the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya permits using a fire drill to produce fire, and in hidden places, it also permits using a burning glass. The Samantapāsādikā states: 'If a dhūta bhikṣu, although staying in a monastery, does not live in the saṃgha's lodgings and does not eat the saṃgha's food, but has a room built for him by a donor, the saṃgha must not appoint him as an administrator. If a bhikṣu is capable of chanting, converting others, and expounding the Dharma so as to benefit the saṃgha, he also must not be appointed as an administrator; good rooms, robes, and bowls should be given to him first, and food and fruits may be given to him in extra portions.' The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: 'If one does not relinquish the twelve dhūta practices and accepts invitations among the laity, each instance is a duṣkṛta; if one cannot maintain them, one should relinquish the dhūta practices.'
