> 4. Correctness and incorrectness of measurements. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: "The antarvāsaka is four cubits long and two cubits wide; the uttarāsaṅga is five cubits long and three cubits wide; the saṃghāṭī is likewise." However, this lower robe turns out to be extremely narrow and small; one should take the general text of the Vinaya. The Vinaya states: "Measure the belly and eat; measure the body and dress; taking just enough is sufficient." According to this, there is no fixed measurement; it allows for adjustment according to the occasion. Even so, there must still be a standard; hence in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya and Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, three grades of measurement are respectively established. Now, according to the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā: if the medium three robes are five cubits long and three cubits wide, the maximum size is six cubits long and three and a half cubits wide, and the minimum size is four cubits long and two and a half cubits wide, they all accord with the Dharma. If they exceed or fall short, taking and keeping them is still valid, because they can be cut or pieced together. As for the bowl, if it exceeds or falls short, receiving it is invalid, because it cannot be cut or pieced together. If it exceeds the measurement, one should perform purification through declaration (śuddhi); if not, one commits a niḥsargika-pāyattika offense (the declaration should be done after receiving, because what is outside the Dharma robe is considered an extra robe). The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: "The length of a cubit is indeterminate; the Buddha instructed that it should accord with the proportions of one's body, not necessarily conforming to the standard cubit."
