> Seventh: the number of layers. The Dharmaguptaka and other Vinayas state: 'They must not be thin and fine. The great robe has two layers, and the remaining two robes are each single-layered.' This refers to new ones. If old \[cloth\] is used, the Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: 'Use four layers to make the great robe, and two layers to make the seven-stripe and five-stripe robes, and so forth.' The Sarvāstivāda states: 'If new, the great robe has three layers: one layer of new and two layers of old.' The rest is as in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya. Therefore that Vinaya states: 'If one makes a great robe or a sitting mat with three layers, if one sews them together with new cloth, at the time of making it is a duṣkṛta; when exceeding the limit it is a pāyattika. If halfway through one repents and unstiches them, it is a duṣkṛta.' In the Vinaya, one may make a pāmśukūla robe with as many \[layers\] as one wishes. The Sarvāstivāda states: 'If one sews together the three robes in multiple layers, and should there be a circumstance where one separates them and travels with one to another place, this is termed not being apart from the robe overnight. If \[the owner\] dies, the former \[opinion\] says it remains within the original boundary, while the latter says it should be given to the caretaker of the sick; because originally it was a single robe and maintained under the same vow.' The Vinaya master says: 'The latter is the definitive view.'
