> One should hold sūtra scrolls in hand and show him their titles; one should also bring Buddha images for his eyes to gaze upon; constantly speak wholesome words to him, and do not convey worldly affairs. An \*Avataṃsaka\* verse says: “Again emitting light named Dignified and Upright, / That light awakens those whose lives are ending; / Seeing them on the verge of death, it urges them to be mindful of the wholesome, / And due to this they are born before the Buddhas. / It also shows them the revered images to make them gaze in reverence, / And again urges them to take refuge in the Buddha; / Due to this they attain clear and pure light.” Moreover, one should invite venerable practitioners and wise persons to come frequently to give guidance. The \*Samantapāsādikā\* says: The caregiver praises the sick person, saying: “Elder, you are fully endowed with the keeping of precepts; do not have lingering attachment to your dwelling place, robes, belongings, acquaintances, or friends; simply keep your mindfulness on the Three Jewels and be mindful of the foulness of the body; within the three realms, be careful not to be indolent, acting in accordance with the length of your life.” And so on. The \*Vinayamātṛkā\* states: If the sick person does not heed the caregiver’s words, or if the caregiver violates the sick person’s wishes, both incur a duṣkṛta. One must deliberate according to the foregoing and not give way to laxity. When he passes away, strike the impermanence chime.
