> Second, miscellaneous affairs within the assembly. Regarding the rule for entering the assembly hall: one must first compose a calm mind outside the door. The Vinaya states: "One should employ five dharmas: First, with a mind of compassion (because the saṃgha encompasses both ordinary people and noble ones, and their practices involve both the coarse and the subtle, compassion and reverence are universally required; this is called respecting the Dharma and honoring people). Second, one should humble oneself like a dust-cleaning cloth (yielding correctness to others and taking faults upon oneself, constantly reflecting on one's own errors and not accusing others of shortcomings). Third, one should know when to sit and rise; if one sees a senior elder, one should not remain seated; if one sees a junior, one should not stand up (in the assembly, one's demeanor should be timely). Fourth, when present in the saṃgha, one does not engage in miscellaneous talk or discuss worldly affairs; one either expounds the Dharma oneself or invites others to expound the Dharma (the assembly relies on the Dharma, so every action must have a standard). Fifth, when seeing something impermissible in the saṃgha, if one's mind cannot bear it patiently, one should remain silent (because lacking good companions, raising the issue will inevitably be untimely; therefore, one harbors forbearance and silence, provisionally conforming to the saṃgha's functioning)."
