> Next, explaining the procedure for relinquishment (applied following the Mahāsāṃghika, as the Dharmaguptaka has no text): 'Venerable One, mindfully pay heed! I, bhikṣu so-and-so, this saṃghāṭī is counted among my three robes; having previously determined and held it, I now relinquish it.' The other two robes are the same. Determining all at once or relinquishing all at once is a vinayātikrama. If a bhikṣuṇī determines the other two robes, the Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: 'Elder sister, mindfully pay heed! I, bhikṣuṇī so-and-so, determine this robe as a kuśūlaka, four cubits long and two and a half cubits wide, holding it as a kuśūlaka robe.' Spoken three times (analogous to the saṃkakṣikā; regional terms differ). 'I determine this robe as a shoulder-covering robe, four cubits long and two and a half cubits wide, holding it as a shoulder-covering robe.' Spoken three times (nowadays the form of the robe has been altered, unlike the original rule; merely stating 'made according to Dharma' without stating the cubit measurements should still be valid). The Mahāsāṃghika states: 'One should make a robe covering the shoulder, called a shoulder-covering robe; if not, it is an offense of transgression. For both robes being saṃkakṣikā, it is a pāyattika offense. A bhikṣuṇī's saṃkakṣikā is four of the Buddha's spans long and two spans wide; if it falls short or exceeds either, it is also a pāyattika. The five robes of a bhikṣuṇī are: the shoulder-covering robe, the bathing robe, and the three robes' (according to this, the schools differ; the Dharmaguptaka prescribes having the saṃkakṣikā, shoulder-covering robe, and so forth).
