> In the first heading, the Avataṃsaka Sūtra states: "If there are those who do not understand the rules of leaving household life, / clinging happily to birth and death without seeking liberation, / for this reason the Bodhisattva renounces kingdom and wealth, / and leaves household life for their sake to seek tranquility. / Bound by the five desires, they do not leave home; / in order to bring sentient beings to liberation, / he demonstrates taking no delight in dwelling in the five desires, / and therefore leaves household life to seek liberation." Based on this text as proof, we know that the merit of leaving household life originates from the Bodhisattva. The Ugraparipṛcchā Sūtra, the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, and so forth all contain methods for leaving household life.
