> Fifth, explaining the practice of mundane meritorious practices upon leaving home. This refers to a monk who, after leaving home, knows only to uphold the precepts and does not aspire to the path. Taking the precepts as supreme, he does not perform any of the rest, regarding it as not of the path. Internally he has much anger and rage, sullying his pure mind, and in feeling he makes no superior progress. This is the view of grasping at precepts (śīlavrataparāmarśa-dṛṣṭi), an affliction of grasping at views, an inferior karma of the desire realm, not a practice of the higher realms. If one cultivates worldly dhyāna, it is karma of the higher realms, yet in the end one falls back into birth and death, with no time of escape; up to having much hearing, practicing giving, lecturing on the sūtras, and recitation and study—all of these belong to existence in the desire realm and have not achieved the outflow-free (anāsrava). The Dàzhìdù lùn states: 'Mundane dharmas are: filial obedience to parents, making offerings to śramaṇas, giving and upholding precepts, the four dhyānas and the four formless absorptions, mindfulness of the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṃgha, the nine visualizations, and the like.' The Chéngshí lùn states: 'Content with matters of minor benefit such as upholding precepts, much hearing, and dhyāna-meditation, through covetous attachment to these matters of minor benefit, one loses sight of the great benefit. The wise should not covetously attach to small benefit and lose sight of the great benefit.'
