> The rule for the saṃkakṣikā (this is the Sanskrit pronunciation from Central India; translated here as "garment narrow at the top and wide at the bottom"): The \*Dharmaguptaka Vinaya\* states: 'One should tie on a saṃkakṣikā when entering a village, either attaching straps or sewing it. If one obtains a garment narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, it should be used as a saṃkakṣikā.' The \*Daśādhyāya-vinaya\* states: 'Because one enters a village with the chest exposed, one wears a saṃkakṣikā; if the wind blows it open, one should attach ties; if not, it is a duṣkṛta.' The \*Pañcavargika-vinaya\* states: 'Entering a village without wearing a saṃkakṣikā is a duṣkṛta.' The \*Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya\* states: 'The saṃkakṣikā is a shoulder-covering garment, four cubits long and two cubits wide; thus it is to be sustained (according to the specifications of this garment, it still has the dimensions to cover the shoulders. What is worn nowadays conforms to the vinaya's "narrow at the top and wide at the bottom"; this was because a master during the Later Wei altered the rule and tailored it, and also produced a commentary to explain it at length).'
