> Nowadays people wear half-shoulder garments, shoulder-coverings, square skirts, miscellaneous skirts, arm coverings, shin coverings, and the like, none of which have canonical texts to rely on. The \*Daśādhyāya-vinaya\* states: 'Garments of the five primary colors, all woolen garments, single-sleeved garments, double-layered garments, all felt garments, all poncho-style garments, two-sleeved garments, all bag-like garments, all shirts, trousers, underpants, and lay clothing must not be worn; wearing them incurs a duṣkṛta.' The \*Dharmaguptaka Vinaya\* states: 'One must not wear tunics, pleated trousers, leggings, gloves, grass clothing, leather clothing, leather hats, bark clothing, leaf clothing, pearl and necklace clothing, bird-feather clothing, or cattle and horse hair clothing; such garments are all improper to wear. You foolish people! You evade what I have prohibited and do other things instead. From this day forward, all lay clothing and tīrthika clothing must not be worn; if worn, it shall be dealt with according to the Dharma.' The \*Madhyamāgama\* states: 'I say of all clothing, food and drink, couches, parks, and people, that whether they may be kept or may not be kept is entirely indeterminate; if keeping them causes wholesome dharmas to increase, I say they may be kept; if the opposite, they may not.' The \*Dharmaguptaka Vinaya\* states: 'When the saṃgha receives various types of robes, keeping them is allowed. If a bhikṣu needs them, he may borrow them to wear; if the monastery is ruined, they may be moved elsewhere; if the original place is restored, they should be arranged as before. If one wears a saṃgha robe, one should take good care of it and not let it be soiled with mud, nor may one go to the privy with it.' The \*Pañcavargika-vinaya\* states: 'When working for the saṃgha, one may wear the saṃgha's robes, but they must not touch the bare skin; when work is finished, wash and store them away.' In the \*Dharmaguptaka Vinaya\*, because of allowing the wearing of robes donated by dānapatis, King Bimbisāra sent the expensive clothing he wore, as well as an expensive woolen rug; the Buddha directed that if it is three cubits wide, five cubits long, and has pile three finger-breadths long, it should be kept through purified donation; other ones that are wide, large, or have long pile are not permitted. If expensive clothing is on the ground, one must not walk upon it. The \*Daśādhyāya-vinaya\* states: 'One may sit upon damask, gauze, brocade, and patterned silk, but may not walk upon them.' The \*Pañcavargika-vinaya\* states: 'Spreading embroidered brocade cushions incurs a duṣkṛta (this refers to lay households).' The \*Dharmaguptaka Vinaya\* states: 'Among bhikṣus allocated dwelling quarters, it is allowed to grant sitting cushions, sleeping cushions, floor mats, undergarments, felt blankets, the three robes, room clothing, various medicines, and the like; if one purposely does not dwell there, all requisites for a śramaṇa are nevertheless provided.' It also states: 'During the cold and snowy months when suffering from cold, one is permitted to wear padded, quilted garments.' It also allows alms-bowl bags, sandal bags, needle cases, meditation belts, waistbands, hats, foot-wiping cloths, heat-absorbing cloths, sandal-wrapping cloths, and so forth, as well as face-wiping towels, body-wiping towels, and tear-wiping cloths. Whenever leaving robes in a layperson's house, they must be dyed an improper color according to the rule for śramaṇa clothing. The \*Pañcavargika-vinaya\* states: 'If one borrows lay clothing and does not return it, it is dropped.' The \*Dharmaguptaka Vinaya\* states: 'One must not sit upon leather, except in border regions. If one obtains brightly colored dyed clothing or brightly colored brocade clothing, one must not keep it; if dyed an improper color, one may keep it. One may keep a mosquito net. One must not keep a leather hat. If suffering from boils, one may keep a boil-covering robe; if one has none, take it from among the saṃgha; taking it outside is also permitted, and when the boil heals, return it to its original place.' The \*Madhyamāgama\* states: 'Ānanda obtained an expensive royal garment, and had the Buddha step on it first before using it himself, thereby causing the donor to obtain great merit (other garments are modeled on this).'
