> In \[the section on\] permission and restriction, it first lists the five marks generally. In total, it permits eight offenses: keeping extra robes encompasses three (ten days, the fifteenth of the month, and emergency gifts); separation from robes contains two (village and araṇya). The "Explanation of the Marks" explains them in full, all pointing forward as follows. The reason for granting the exception is that when the summer \[retreat\] ends and robes are prepared, there are many affairs of going out and coming in; if permissions were not granted, nothing could be accomplished. According to the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, nine benefits are obtained: (1) Ten nights (extra robes); (2) Six nights; (3) One night (these two are separation from robes); (4) Keeping the saṃghāṭī for five reasons (first, danger; second, rain; third, making a great robe; fourth, washing and dyeing; fifth, deep storage); (5) Keeping the rains robe for five reasons; (6) Eating repeatedly; (7) Leaving the community; (8 and 9) Entering a village without informing at the two times. (The Dharmaguptaka does not permit unseasonable times; the schools differ). Below that, it specifically selects keeping extra robes, first clarifying the limits.
