> In \[the section on\] admonishing equanimity of mind: fearing that one's mind will be perturbed by gain and loss regarding material benefits, a sūtra is cited to show \[the truth\] so that the mind may be impartial. First, it lists four dharmas. These are the eight worldly winds: four adverse and four favorable. The text first brings up the adverse, hence it says there are four; only later does it combine and distinguish them, saying eight dharmas. Fearlessness pertains to the mind, because it abides in peace. Being unturned pertains to body and speech, because they maintain constancy. Below, where it says "Gain...", it shows the equality of gain and loss. First, it specifically explains the first, which is the main point here; the other three are cited incidentally and are therefore not clarified. The eight dharmas are: (1) gain, (2) loss (which are the above gain and loss), (3) defamation, (4) praise, (5) acclaim, (6) ridicule, (7) sorrow, (8) joy. The four adverse correspond to the above four favorable; their opposition can be known. The above refers to self-cultivation. Below, where it says "For...", it shows others. Gain and loss, honor and disgrace, all stem from root karmic conditions; when adverse and favorable winds blow, there is therefore neither joy nor sorrow. (In some editions, the previous passage was treated as small-character commentary, and the sūtra text was also erroneously omitted in transmission.)
