四分律行事鈔資持記 1.264

- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.264](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1805.1.264)

> In \[the section on\] essence and function, the opening sentence covers all four positions. From "if" onward, it specifically shows the essence of the Saṅgha; it first clarifies that the essence is universal. From "now" onward, it clarifies the distinctness of function. The above briefly showed the essence of the Saṅgha based on the Vinaya; the root Vinaya only clarifies the essence with reference to numbers—namely, one person, many persons, and four persons. If one takes the conventional function, it is based on the \*Satyasiddhi-śāstra\*. Examining the meaning of the present text: although not directly accomplishing \[the karman\], four persons genuinely accomplish it; if this is not the essence, what is it! This shows that the old records which pointed to the previously indicated school as the essence of the Saṅgha were mistaken.
