> Under explaining distinct titles: ancient masters held that the name karmavācanā was restricted to saṃgha transactions, so it had to be resolved. In the answer, there are two passages from our own school: First, showing the transaction of receiving \[precepts\]. Once the jñapti-caturthā arose, the three utterances were discontinued. Śāriputra asked: "Is receiving ordination through the three utterances a properly performed karmavācanā or not?" The Buddha said: "It is a properly performed karmavācanā; after my own prohibition, it is no longer called receiving full ordination." And from "and" downward, that is in "Poṣadha." There, because the ṣaḍvargikas on the day of poṣadha spoke, greeted, and performed karmavācanās with various laypeople (that is, the five precepts and three refuges), recited the precepts (that is, the marks of the five precepts), and preached the Dharma, the Buddha said: "This should be performed by the thera." Since the three utterances and five precepts are both performed face-to-face with a person, they temporarily prove face-to-face transactions. Below, the Daśādhyāya-vinaya is cited to jointly prove the two transactions. That text clarifies doubtful questions, which the Buddha resolved for them. From "karmavācanā" downward, it continues: "A monk who comes later is not given a share."
