> In the conditions: first, it explains conforming to principle. Because although words are generally permitted, principle cannot be violated; often the foolish people of the world arbitrarily make additions and reductions. Below, from 'addition', it explains what is permitted: the first phrase permits addition and reduction. The Commentary says: 'For example, in demarcating a great boundary, it lists the two commonalities; for an ordination platform or small boundary, the meaning of gathering the Saṃgha is the same, so how could there be two distinctions? Why not list them!' According to this, adding them is also permissible; like in the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya for demarcating a platform, the text adds 'sharing one poṣadha', and so on (this shows that the three small boundaries of the platform may have additions); reducing the two commonalities is also permissible, as in various boundaries (this shows that the great boundary may have reductions). The next phrase permits changing the phrasing. Glosses and synonyms refer to different words with the same meaning; such as saying 'So-and-so acts as upādhyāya', 'requests precepts from the Saṃgha', 'the assembly recites the precepts', and the like. The two phrases below from 'yet' conclude the above two permissions. Below, from 'categories', it cites three examples: first, citing differences among schools as proof. In the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya, the jñapti and karmavācanā uniformly have four phrases, completely lacking the fourth; the Daśādhyāya-vinaya's precept reception procedure states: 'years and age are already complete, robes and bowl are fully provided', and so on. Furthermore, in the framework of the karmavācanā of other schools, there are still additions and reductions: in the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya, beneath 'the elders approve', there is no character zhě (者); in the concluding phrase, beneath 'the Saṃgha already', there is no character rěn (忍); in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, after the fourth phrase cites the root, it says: 'those who approve are silent elders', and above the character shuō (說) there is the character biàn (便), adding five characters in total. Below, from 'arriving', second, it cites translation as proof. The Commentary says: 'Translating the three robes as bedding and sitting mats roughly captures their appearance, but loses their original substance', and so on (such as in the karmavācanā reducing six years). Third, glosses and synonyms as proof. The character glosses have identical meaning, so it says 'both are acceptable'. The single phrase below, from 'therefore', concludes the above three examples.
