> In the second question: although the Vinaya sets an explicit restriction, in principle it is not entirely closed off, so this is resolved here.
> In the answer, citing the Vinaya: that was because a monk demarcated a boundary across a river, and on the fifteenth day wanted to go to poṣadha but could not cross over, so the Buddha prohibited it. 'Excepting boat and bridge' clarifies the allowance. Bridges and beams are of a single category, though the materials may be large or small. 'If the current is swift' clarifies the prohibition. 'Swift' means rapid. From 'If...' onward, resolving and making it passable according to principle. The phrasing omits the word 'boat'. Although it is a swift current, as long as it can be crossed and does not obstruct coming to assemble, it is judged to be permissible in principle. Below, citing the Bhikṣuṇī-vinaya further confirms without doubt that demarcating without a bridge is permissible. This refers to the saṃghāvaśeṣa precept against crossing a river alone. That text says that as long as one hitches up one's robes to cross the water, even within the boundary one incurs an offense; hence it says 'general'.
