> In resolving the objection, first is the question: The earlier citation of the Samantapāsādikā states that when the ground is excavated or swept by water and there are also no monks dwelling there, all say it is not lost; this appears to be a contradiction. The Commentary states: "In the Samantapāsādikā's \[case of being\] swept by water, it is supposed that the monks have all dispersed; could someone stay overnight beneath the water to guard the boundary?" In the answer, it first reconciles them without contradiction on the basis of the presence or absence of a mind of abandonment. The phrase "all say" in the text refers to the aforementioned Daśādhyāya-vinaya and Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa. From "The Four-Part \[Vinaya\]..." downward proves the earlier point of not being lost, because there is no mind of abandonment. The text comes from the "Bhaiṣajyaskandhaka." As for "old saṅghārāma," it indicates a desolate and abandoned place. "Not losing the pure ground" clearly shows that the great boundary still persists. From "Also..." downward, it says that the bhikṣus did not know where the pure ground was, and the Buddha replied as in the Manual. The phrase starting with "Therefore..." concludes by clarifying both texts. (The text resolving the doubt originally comes from the methods for medicine; only when the wise examine it in detail will they know the error of the past.)
