> The affairs of the ancestral tradition of the Saṃgha are numerous, like a net; the five gateways of this chapter are like the head-rope of the net. Using these five is like lifting the head-rope: then none of the other meshes of the net will fail to be straight. The title is taken from this metaphor to manifest what is correct and essential. In maintaining \[the Dharma\] and gathering the assembly, what else could one do if this were abandoned? Reverently looking upon the sacred teachings, they are clear and evident, and following them is very easy; yet because people are not pure and upright, raising them up may be difficult. To have the teachings but not implement them can truly be a cause for long sighs!
