> In the fifth \[item\], first, the conditions and marks are indicated. Having the aspiration but not yet fully possessing \[the prerequisites\] is why it says "a minor portion". Below, the vinaya prohibitions are cited. Stating "obtains the precepts" means that they are suddenly aroused upon the jñapticaturthā karmavācanā. "Incurs an offense" means failing to follow the prescribed gradual progression. The above five selections proceed sequentially from broad to narrow: first, selecting humans with respect to the various destinies; second, selecting the physical retributions among humans; third, selecting karmic deeds with respect to the superior retribution; fourth, selecting deportment with respect to purity of karmic deed; fifth, selecting the ritual procedure with respect to possessing complete deportment. Furthermore, they are subsumed into three \[categories\]: the first two are both retribution, while the middle \[category of\] karma is the same as before; the latter two are essence and marks, where physical appearance and ritual procedure are both alike. Furthermore, when subsuming them with respect to obstacles and impediments: the first three are heavy impediments, and only when they are absent is \[ordination\] accomplished; the remaining three are light obstacles, and even if present, \[ordination\] is still generally permitted. Discern this for yourself further.
