> The words of request are four: First, stating the primary intent to the Saṃgha. Second, reiterating the prior condition, saying 'following the upādhyāya'. Third, reiterating the present intent, saying 'receiving from the Saṃgha'; restating the upādhyāya indicates that the precept-method comes from the Saṃgha, while practice follows the teacher. (These two phrases are explained according to the Commentary.) Fourth, praying for compassionate rescue; the Vinaya root text reads 'May the Saṃgha out of compassion deliver me'; the karmavācanā is also like this; it is suspected to be a scribal transposition. The note 'instructing him to sit down again' means that the instructor, having received the deputation, has finished the task assigned to him.
