> Under 'Rebuking Errors': 'Desolate' (蕭然) means quiet and solitary. 'Both gatherings' is either in terms of teacher and disciple regarding one another, or in terms of the two matters of material goods and the Dharma. From 'accomplished' downward, it uses metaphors for the impermanence of the teacher-disciple relationship. 'Wild horses' (野馬): Tiantai states: 'Because the wind stirs the dust, in the wilderness it looks like running wild horses.' (Zhuangzi states: 'It is floating dust.') From 'extreme' downward, it uses a metaphor for the invalidity of receiving the Dharma. 'Mirage' (陽焰): The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: 'Extremely tormented by hunger and thirst, one sees hot vapors and thinks them to be water.' This refers to that which seems to exist but does not.
