> Explaining the first condition, 'proper invitation': First, citing the two invitations, both universally involve turning one's back. Next, clarifying the substance of the food. Of the five proper foods, three are listed, not retaining obsolete teachings. 'Thick' means dense and rich, combining with the above to make four. Below, citing the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, it distinguishes this from the thick gruel above. Although the substance is the same, thin and thick are differentiated; it is taken as it first comes out of the cauldron, not defined by congealing and swelling.
