> In the third, in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, first an exception is made for not receiving: carrying it while walking without letting people see it, and having to leave the road to eat, are both meant to avoid suspicion and criticism. Nuo 搦 is pronounced ning and ni, meaning a handful. "Also..." onwards next institutes easy purification. Because the two texts contradict each other, a note is used to harmonize them. In the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya and the Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā, the texts are as cited previously. "Also..." onwards resolves and clarifies the intention of the exception. In the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya, in times of famine, eight matters are allowed as exceptions: keeping overnight indoors, cooking indoors, cooking for oneself, improper touch, two foods of the Sangha and laity, two fruits of water and land, and not performing the procedure for leftover food. In the Five Hundred Questions, receiving once every seven days and preparing it oneself does not lose \[reception\]. "First purifies rice and takes it" lacks characters; that text fully says: "first purifies rice, receives, and takes it" (meaning having purified it with fire, one receives it).
