> In the specific exposition, the recounting of the intent has two parts. First, pointing to the full treatment. Regarding "the various traditions": the Saṃghabhedavastu states: counting from the mother's womb, taking all intercalary months (without counting the poṣadha days). In the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya, it first allows counting the womb, next allows counting intercalary months, and finally allows using the years of a śramaṇa to make up the number (there are also no poṣadha days, but there is the fruit of a śramaṇa, which is also the superior dharma of the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya, though the Dharmaguptaka does not list it among the exceptions). The Vinayamātṛkā first allows counting the years in the womb, second allows counting intercalary months, third allows counting the fourteen-day poṣadhas, and fourth speaks of truly obtaining arhatship (this is the same as the Dharmaguptaka, arhatship being the superior dharma). Regarding "examining the calendar": ancient masters said that this country uses a calendar with one intercalary month every three years; the Commentary refutes this, saying: examining other calendrical arts, an intercalary month occurs only every thirty-two or thirty-three months, so how could it be limited to three years? (Consecutive long months also come from secular calendars.) From "only..." onward, it shows the abridgment, first recounting the intent of the abridgment. From "only through..." onward, it indicates the method of abridgment. Regarding "one sentence": a sentence encompasses long and short, referring to the modern and ancient sections below; because calculation methods since antiquity and their theoretical formulations have been extremely cumbersome, now a few lines summarize the general essentials, intending to show that it is minimal, hence called "one sentence."
