> In the next section, "Length and width": there are two statements of measurement: the preceding \*Samantapāsādikā\* is the measurement of the begging rite; the subsequent \*Dharmaguptaka\* is the measurement for building the hut. One span (\*diś\*) is two feet; calculating the figures, it can be understood. (The character \*zhe\* \[span\] should have the radical \*shi\* \[stone\], meaning stretching; the distance between the thumb and the middle finger is called a span.) If it does not reach six spans, both exceeding and \[failure to\] beg are absent (there should be an impediment or objection here); if within twelve spans, there is \[failure to\] beg but no exceeding; beyond that, both exceeding and \[failure to\] beg are present; if one has already obtained the rite, there is only exceeding the measure—understand it in this way.
