> The listing of conditions has two parts. Under 'exceeding beforehand': the first condition cites the Vinaya to explain the intention behind the exception for urgent donations. In the third, 'when ten days remain before the pravāraṇā' means that from the sixth day of the seventh month onward one may receive it; receiving it rashly prior to that is called 'exceeding beforehand'. In the fourth, 'no extenuating circumstances': in the non-offenses of the Vinaya, if one's robes are seized or lost, taking it beforehand is not an offense. Under 'exceeding afterward': the third condition allows us to know by analogy that the prior and subsequent \[offenses\] are not mutually committed. In the fourth: the Vinaya states that if the bhikṣu with whom the robe is deposited travels far, or the water or land routes are blocked, exceeding afterward is not an offense. In the fifth: if one receives it on the sixth day of the seventh month, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month one must assign it by proxy; if one does not assign it, on the sixteenth day one commits an offense. (If one receives the kathina robe, one assigns it by proxy on the fifteenth day of the twelfth month; subsequent increments are to be understood by analogy.) If one receives it on the seventh, one day is subtracted from before, and one day is added after. (On the sixteenth day of the eighth month one assigns it by proxy; if one does not assign it, on the seventeenth day one commits an offense.) In this manner, even up to receiving it on the fifteenth day, nine days are subtracted from before, and nine days are added after. (On the twenty-fourth day of the eighth month one assigns it by proxy; if one does not assign it, on the next day one commits an offense.) This is called successive addition.
