> In the fifth: "the worthy and noble" in the \*Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya\* generally refers to the three vehicles, both great and small. \*Zhi\* (𢡠) is pronounced \*zhi\*, an alternate name for a banner (it also has the two pronunciations \*chi\* and \*shi\*); the character should be \*shi\* (識), which is glossed as a mark. That "the bowl is the vessel of a renunciant" also means distinguishing them from non-Buddhists and the secular crowd; based on its explanation later, it is cited here in connection with it. In our own school, it was for the cold: in the "Robe Skandhaka", the Buddha, because of the night cold, sequentially took the three robes and put them on in layers during the first, middle, and late watches of the night, and therefore prescribed the three robes. The Buddha said: "In the future, good sons who cannot endure the bitter cold will find keeping three robes sufficient, and must not exceed them." "External sections" refers to the above two treatises. That "the Tathāgatas of the three periods all wore them" specifically puts forward the ultimate fruit to manifest the noble deportment, intending to cause the wearer to give rise to superior thoughts.
