> In \[the section\] "Explaining the Names": As for the general name, it is because the upper, middle, and lower robes share the same designation. The Ekottarika-āgama has only the Sanskrit name. The sūtras and vinayas cited earlier and later mostly refer to it as kaṣāya. Paramārtha's Miscellaneous Notes states: "Kaṣāya is the comprehensive name for the three robes in foreign lands. The name contains many meanings: it is either called 'clothing that departs from defilement' (because it cuts off the six dusts), or called 'clothing that reduces \[passions\]' (because it cuts away afflictions), or called 'lotus clothing' (because it is free from defiling attachment), or called 'clothing of intermediate colors' (because it is made of the three proper colors)." In the commentary notes, first the Sanskrit designation is shown. Being named after color refers to what the sūtras call "ruined-color robe". The text below is what is cited later stating, "this translates as dye of an improper color." As for "kaṣāya taste", this indicates that it is not the primary name for a robe; the Commentary states: "As in the six tastes there is a kaṣāya taste, how could it be a robe?" "If..." below next distinguishes ancient translations. "Among the thirty" refers to the four precepts \[concerning robes made of\] silkworm silk, floss, two \[kinds of\] wool, and \[not keeping a rug for\] less than six years.
