> Within the third \[heading\], in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, the first \[part\] shows what accords with the Dharma. From "If..." onward, it weeds out what does not accord with the Dharma. "Flame" refers to the subtle tip of rising flames; hot ashes and charcoal fires without flame tips all fail to constitute purification. The above explains the impropriety of the method. From "Bhikṣu..." onward, it explains the impropriety of the person. The note on "touched by fire" intends to make clear that where fire did not reach, one may eat it without fault, identical to the Vinayadvāviṃśatividyā-śāstra above. Eating what was cut by knife or fingernail is because it was not cooking for oneself. However, since it was self-purification, it is not without the fault of destroying marks. In the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya, purifying roots and stalks with fire intends to show that it also applies generally, and is not only for seeds. In the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, the first \[part\] explains accomplishing the procedure based on circumstances.
