> In the narration of intent, only the diverse requisites of the permissive approach are clarified. Because by prohibition there is only a single bowl, its meaning involves no confusion, and therefore it is not narrated. The first two sentences show the abundance of items. \*Yīn\* means numerous. \*Còu\* means to gather. The next two sentences clarify the intent behind granting permission to keep them. For a superior practitioner, a single bowl is sufficient to sustain life; for inferior practitioners, a slight deficiency makes them incapable of advancing on the path; hence it says "according to their retribution." Supporting affairs means conditions being complete; the path being established means practice being accomplished. From "Although" onward clarifies that one must act in accordance with the Dharma. The first sentence tracks the preceding. The next sentence indicates the Dharma: although it is said that keeping them is permitted, it is not without limit. The lower two sentences clarify infractions. "This regulation" refers to the regulation of offenses. \*Shè\* means to pardon or release. From "Since" onward reveals the intent of the present chapter. The diverse requisites are not one; keeping and using them entails confusion, hence it says "intermixed." Marks refer to the forms and appearances of the items. Standard means formula. From "Briefly" onward concludes and indicates: referring to "as below" points to the permissive section below. (Some say that the preceding section narrates the permissive section, and from "Since intermixed" onward clarifies the prohibitive teaching; this is incorrect.)
