> In the Mahīśāsaka, first what is not according to the Dharma is stated. The first four incur a duṣkṛta, and the last one results in a sthūlātyaya. 'Dyeing them' means dyeing strips and borders with different colors. 'Sewing together' means not doing backstitching, hence the note refutes it. Regarding 'pleated borders', according to that Vinaya it is illicit for all three robes; the Dharmaguptaka permits it for the lower robe, but for the other two it must not be pleated either. 'Half facing upward and downward' means the openings of the borders must all follow downward and not run counter upward. From 'Ānanda' onward, next it clarifies what is according to the Dharma: first, it instructs on arranging the strips and borders. 'Mi' means to follow; it means the strips and borders overlapping one another must follow to the left and right. Taking the seven-strip robe as an example: the three strips on each of the two sides each follow one direction to the left and right, and the single strip in the middle overlaps atop both the left and right, hence it is said that 'both directions are followed'. From 'If' onward, next it clarifies cutting and tailoring according to the material: first, the text is cited. 'If one obtains robes' means either robe material or finished robes. 'Insufficient' means when making a twenty-five-strip great robe, the cloth is still scarce. Step by step it decreases, hence it says 'up to' twice. From 'According to' onward, it resolves the meaning: first, it resolves the text's phrasing; second, it shows the method of reception; third, it cites text as proof.
