> In demonstrating virtue: in the first section, there are five citations. In the Ekottarika-āgama: that slandering and praising \[him\] is the same as \[slandering and praising\] the Buddha is intended to clarify that the harm and benefit are grave. From "By..." below, it links them together to explain why it is grave. In the Daśacakra-sūtra: according to that text, it is a seven-character verse; below the fourth line in the present Manual there are several extra characters, which are likely an erroneous later interpolation. That text merely rebukes the breaking of precepts; because of breaking precepts, one loses the dhūta practice, which illustrates the extreme gravity of the fault of breaking precepts. The first line indicates the fault. The next line clarifies the gravity of the fault, meaning it is equivalent to the five heinous crimes, which the Buddha cannot save. The lower two lines cite proofs. "Not entering the assembly" means among the two kinds of Saṃgha. This is spoken based on committing an offense of the first category \[pārājika\]. In the Kuśalamūlasaṃparigraha-sūtra: regarding "declining with deferential words," it says: "Seeing a wheel-turning king I would still consider difficult, let alone being permitted to share a couch and sit together with him; now that I have attained an audience to draw near and inquire, this is already a great benefit; how much more so to be bid to share a couch and sit together, which is extremely rare; the Tathāgata is profoundly endowed with loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity," and so forth. In the Saṃyuktāgama: the circumstances are the same, differing only in adding the exchange of robes and praise. It clarifies that when the Buddha was at Jetavana, the bhikṣus saw Kāśyapa coming dressed in coarse robes and gave rise to an arrogant mind; the Buddha then exchanged robes with him to quell their arrogance. Since the Buddha still revered him on account of his austere practices, one knows that his merit is superior. The Four-Part Vinaya: this refers to the text of the "Cīvara-skandhaka," which clarifies that while the Buddha was in Śrāvastī, he told the bhikṣus: "I wish to sit in quiet contemplation for three months; let no outsider enter, except for a single attendant." The bhikṣus established a rule that if anyone entered, they would make a pāyattika confession. At that time, the elder Vaśavartin (the son of Prajāpati), along with sixty dhūta \[practitioners\] from the country of Pāveyyaka, did not follow the bhikṣus' rule and went together to the Buddha's place. The Buddha praised them: "Excellent, excellent! Vaśavartin, you are all araṇya-dwellers, and are permitted to inquire after me as you wish." When the bhikṣus heard this, many practiced the dhūta austerities, even relinquishing extra robes until they formed a great heap. Thus one knows that being of few desires, detached from defilement, and compliant with the Buddha's words is precisely what makes one an attendant of the Buddha.
