> In demonstrating the benefits: the treatise explains that each of the twelve dhūtas possesses ten benefits; here it temporarily cites just one kind, the araṇya-dweller, to demonstrate their manifold benefits; therefore, when listing the marks in the text below, it does not cite them again. First it marks and indicates them. The words "briefly speaking" clarify that it is not exhaustive. The words "to the end of one's life" clarify the bounden vow. Next it lists the marks. The first means having no personal obligations; the second means being unattached to material possessions; the third means not being obstructed by others; in the fourth, the treatise says: "One's mind increasingly delights in practicing dwelling in an araṇya," meaning that the mind delighting in quietude becomes increasingly superior; the fifth means having nothing to manage and seek; the sixth means being without fear in empty places, thereby demonstrating one's original aspiration; the seventh is leaving clamor and turmoil behind; the eighth is that by dwelling alone in quietude, there is nothing one need do; the ninth is that whenever cultivating dhyāna-meditation, one must rely on quiet conditions; the tenth, "the perception of non-obstruction," refers to the emptiness samādhi, which the treatise renders as "the perception of being without hindrance." From "If..." below, thirdly it shows the exceptions for certain conditions. Regarding "having causes and conditions," the treatise says: first, supplying the sick; second, seeking medicine for the sick; third, seeking a caregiver for the sick; fourth, expounding the Dharma for the sick; fifth, expounding the Dharma for other people; sixth, listening to the Dharma to teach and transform; seventh, making offerings to venerable elders; eighth, supplying the holy assembly; ninth, chanting profound sūtras; tenth, teaching others to chant profound sūtras. As for having "general and specific," this depends on the presence or absence of the conditions for supplying; non-Buddhists impose a single rule without exceptions, and thus it is not the same. Below it points to that chapter, the text of which appears in chapters thirteen and fourteen.
