> The next section: according to this treatise's text, it generally indicates that both kinds of robes possess ten benefits; however, what is presently cited specifically applies to rag robes; the robes bestowed by householders were merely cited in passing; compared with the Vinaya text above, the distinct marks can be seen. Among the ten benefits, the first means that by wearing this robe, one is not haughty or indolent; the second, third, and fourth can be understood; in the fifth, the character \*zhe\* (者) is a textual corruption and should be \*zhuo\* (著, to wear); the treatise says: "Wearing dyed robes with a mind of revulsion, not out of greed for beauty"; the sixth means having few desires accords with the Path, while seeking much increases evil; the seventh means restraining the body; the eighth is for relinquishing ornaments and adornment; in the ninth, the treatise says: "According with the cultivation of the eightfold noble path, because one leaves behind wrong livelihood and accords with right livelihood"; the tenth means that by wearing this robe, one spurs one's mind and conduct and is not defiled by the world. The treatise concludes generally: "Seeing these ten benefits, one wears the two kinds of robes"; hence we know that these ten do not apply exclusively to rag robes. According to the treatise, rag robes naturally possess ten benefits of their own: first, one does not associate with householders on account of robes; second, one does not display signs of begging for robes; third, one does not use expedient speech to give signs for obtaining robes; fourth, one does not seek them in the four directions; fifth, if one does not obtain robes, one does not worry; sixth, obtaining them, one does not rejoice; seventh, cheap things are easy to obtain and free from faults; eighth, it does not violate the four reliances first received; ninth, one enters the ranks of those wearing coarse robes (meaning entering among the rag-robe dhūta); tenth, it is not coveted by others.
